About Pisa Cathedral (Duomo)

A magnificent Romanesque cathedral begun in 1064, where Galileo measured pendulum swing by watching its famous bronze lamp, featuring Giovanni Pisano's remarkable pulpit and a façade of extraordinary decorative richness.

Pisa Cathedral is one of the supreme achievements of Romanesque architecture in Italy and one of the founding monuments of the whole architectural tradition of the Pisa School, which influenced church building across Sardinia, Corsica, and the western Mediterranean for centuries. Construction began in 1064 under the architect Buscheto, funded by the spoils of a naval victory over the Saracens at Palermo.

The cathedral's façade is extraordinarily rich: four tiers of colonnaded galleries, alternating stripes of white marble and dark greenish-grey marble, and a profusion of carved decoration. The interior is vast and luminous, with three naves of granite columns supporting arcades that lead to a long nave. Giovanni Pisano's marble pulpit (1302–1311) is one of the masterpieces of Italian Gothic sculpture, its panels depicting the life of Christ with extraordinary expressiveness. The famous lamp hanging in the nave, the Lamp of Galileo, is said to be the one whose oscillation first suggested to the young Galileo the isochronous nature of the pendulum in 1583.

Did you know? The Cathedral was funded by the spoils of a Pisan naval victory over the Saracens at Palermo in 1063, an unusual example of maritime conquest directly financing one of the world's great religious monuments.
