About Borgo Stretto
The arcaded medieval shopping street at the heart of Pisa, a covered promenade of round arches, historic cafés, and local shops running from Piazza dei Cavalieri to the Arno, the living pulse of everyday Pisan life.
Borgo Stretto is the main artery of Pisa's historic centre, the arcaded pedestrian street running southward from the area of Piazza dei Cavalieri toward the Arno and the Ponte di Mezzo. Its name means 'narrow borough', though in practice it is the widest and most elegant of Pisa's medieval streets. A continuous loggia of round arches at street level carries the buildings above, creating a covered promenade that shelters pedestrians from summer heat and winter rain alike, reminiscent of the arcades of Bologna. Behind the arcades are local shops, historic cafés, pharmacies, and small restaurants serving the daily needs of Pisans rather than primarily tourists. The Palazzo Agostini, with its elaborately carved Gothic façade on the corner of Via della Sapienza, is the finest medieval building on the street. Parallel to Borgo Stretto runs Borgo Largo, together forming the commercial backbone of Pisa's historic centre.
Did you know? The arcades of Borgo Stretto serve the same practical purpose as the famous porticos of Bologna, protecting pedestrians from summer heat and winter rain while drawing commercial activity to the street level beneath the buildings.
