About Giuseppe Verdi's Birthplace: Le Roncole

The small village of Le Roncole near Busseto, about 35 kilometres northwest of Parma, is the birthplace of Giuseppe Verdi, born here on 10 October 1813 in a modest family inn, and destined to become the most important Italian composer of the 19th century and arguably the defining voice of Italian opera.

Giuseppe Verdi was born on 10 October 1813 in the small village of Le Roncole in the province of Parma, the son of an innkeeper and general grocer. The house in which he was born, a simple building on the village main street, is now a museum. Verdi's early life in this modest rural community was transformed by the patronage of Antonio Barezzi, a wealthy Busseto merchant and music lover who recognised the boy's talent and funded his musical education, first in Busseto and later in Milan. Verdi became the defining composer of Italian opera in the second half of the 19th century, composing 28 operas including Rigoletto (1851), Il Trovatore (1853), La Traviata (1853), Aida (1871), Otello (1887), and Falstaff (1893). He also became a figure of great political and national significance, his name becoming an acronym for the Risorgimento slogan 'Viva Vittorio Emanuele Re D'Italia'. The Villa Verdi at Sant'Agata, where the composer lived for most of his adult life, is a short distance from Le Roncole and also open to visitors.

Did you know? During the Risorgimento (Italian unification movement), the name VERDI became a political acronym, shouting 'Viva VERDI!' in public was a coded way of shouting 'Viva Vittorio Emanuele Re D'Italia!' (Long live Victor Emmanuel King of Italy!) without risking arrest from Austrian authorities.
