About Place de la Bastille
The square where the fortress-prison was stormed on 14 July 1789, launching the French Revolution, today marked by the July Column and the modern Opéra Bastille.
The Place de la Bastille is one of the most historically significant squares in the world, marking the spot where the French Revolution was ignited. On 14 July 1789, a Paris mob stormed the Bastille fortress, a royal prison that had come to symbolise the tyranny of the Ancien Régime. The irony is that only seven prisoners were inside at the time, and they were hardly political martyrs: four forgers, two lunatics, and an aristocrat jailed by his own family. Nevertheless, the fall of the Bastille became the great symbolic moment of the Revolution, and 14 July, Bastille Day, remains the French national holiday.
The fortress was demolished immediately and its stones sold as souvenirs. Today the site is marked by the Colonne de Juillet (July Column), built between 1831 and 1840 to commemorate not the 1789 Revolution but the July Revolution of 1830. It is capped by a gilded "Spirit of Liberty" figure. At the western edge of the square stands the Opéra Bastille (1989), designed by Carlos Ott and opened to mark the Revolution's bicentenary.
Did you know? When the Bastille was stormed on 14 July 1789, only 7 prisoners were found inside, not a single political prisoner among them.
