About Navarre Wine Region & Comarca de Pamplona
The historic wine-producing region surrounding Pamplona, the Denominación de Origen Navarra produces reds, whites, and rosados (rosés) from Garnacha, Tempranillo, and Chardonnay; the locally produced rosado is the traditional wine of San Fermín and Navarrese cuisine.
The Denominación de Origen (DO) Navarra covers approximately 17,000 hectares of vineyards in the southern half of Navarre, from the Pyrenean foothills south to the Ebro River valley. The region has been producing wine since Roman times; archaeological evidence of viticulture at the Roman villa of Liédena (near Sangüesa) dates from the 1st-2nd century AD. The classic wine of Navarre is the rosado (rosé), made primarily from Garnacha (Grenache) grapes grown in the warmer southern areas of the DO, which is light, dry, and versatile. The region also produces Garnacha-based reds, Tempranillo blends, and increasingly, white wines from Chardonnay and Viura. The sub-region of Baja Montaña (Lower Mountains) around Pamplona produces wines with more freshness and acidity than the hotter southern areas. The rosado is the default wine of San Fermín, served in bars throughout the old town during the festival, and of Navarrese cuisine in general.
Did you know? The Piquillo pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Piquillo') is native to the region of Navarre and is produced primarily in the town of Lodosa in the Ribera Alta. The peppers are harvested in autumn, roasted over open fires, hand-peeled, and packed in their own juices, a process that gives them their distinctive sweet, slightly smoky flavour. Piquillo peppers stuffed with salt cod, foie gras, or seafood are among the most celebrated dishes in Navarrese and Basque haute cuisine.
