About Calle Estafeta: Running of the Bulls Route
The most famous stretch of the encierro route, the straight 280-metre Calle Estafeta where runners have the longest sprint with the bulls, and the street most associated with Hemingway's accounts of San Fermín.
The encierro (running of the bulls) route is 875 metres long, running from the Santo Domingo corral through the old town to the Plaza de Toros. Calle Estafeta is the longest and most iconic section: a straight, narrow street about 280 metres long with tall buildings on both sides creating a canyon effect that amplifies the sound of the running bulls. The street runs at a slight downhill gradient from the Town Hall corner where Calle Mercaderes turns into it (the Curva del Ayuntamiento) down towards the bullring, giving runners their longest opportunity to sprint ahead of the bulls, and their smallest opportunity to escape. The buildings along the street have special wooden barriers erected each morning of the encierro; balconies are sold at premium prices to spectators. It is this section of the route that Hemingway described most vividly: the sound of the bulls approaching, the crowd pressed against the walls, the brief moment of decision whether to run or press back into a doorway.
Did you know? The six fighting bulls used in each encierro are the same bulls that fight (and die) in the afternoon corrida. The encierro is not a separate event, it is the traditional method of moving the bulls from their corrals outside the city to the bullring. The practice dates from the 14th century, when it was a practical necessity; today it has evolved into a festival spectacle, but the connection to the bullfight is still direct.
