About Chapel of the Martyrs of Otranto

The harrowing memorial chapel in Otranto Cathedral housing the skulls and bones of 800 townspeople massacred by Ottoman forces in 1480, one of the most powerful memorials to religious persecution in the world.

The Chapel of the Martyrs of Otranto is the most haunting memorial space in the Salento. In 1480, Ottoman forces under Gedik Ahmed Pasha invaded the city of Otranto, massacred most of its population, and demanded that the survivors convert to Islam. According to tradition, 800 townspeople refused to convert and were beheaded on a hill outside the city. The skulls and bones of these martyrs are now displayed in a glass-fronted chapel in the Cathedral of Otranto, arranged in rows on the walls. The effect is simultaneously horrifying and deeply moving. The martyrs were beatified by the Catholic Church in 1771 and canonised as saints by Pope Francis in 2013. Their veneration is one of the most vivid examples of how the memory of the Ottoman raids on the Italian coast has been preserved in the religious culture of the region.
