About Jardin Exotique

The Jardin Exotique is Monaco's spectacular cliff-side succulent garden, perched on a steep rock face overlooking the entire principality, with one of the world's finest collections of cacti and succulents, and a prehistoric cave with stalagmites and stalactites accessible from below.

The Jardin Exotique de Monaco occupies one of the most dramatically positioned garden sites in the world, a steep cliff face on the western edge of the principality, where the rock provides the warm, well-drained conditions that allow plants from arid regions of Africa and the Americas to thrive outdoors in a Mediterranean climate. Established in 1933, the garden contains over 7,000 plant species, with an emphasis on large specimen cacti and succulent plants, agaves, aloes, euphorbias, and cactus specimens that are among the oldest and largest of their kind in Europe, some having grown here for over 80 years to heights of several metres. The garden descends the cliff face via a network of paths and iron staircases, offering extraordinary views across the principality and out to the Mediterranean at every level. Beneath the garden, accessible via the ticket, is the Grotte de l'Observatoire, a prehistoric cave with impressive stalagmite and stalactite formations, used by prehistoric humans from the Neolithic period onwards, with archaeological finds including bones and stone tools.

Did you know? Some of the cactus and succulent specimens in Monaco's Jardin Exotique have been growing in the garden since it opened in 1933, making them more than 90 years old. Certain species of columnar cactus can grow slowly for centuries, and the garden's oldest specimens, now several metres tall, represent nearly a century of uninterrupted growth.
