About Synagogue of Modena
Modena's monumental synagogue, completed in 1873 in the area of the former Jewish Ghetto, is one of the most beautiful 19th-century synagogues in northern Italy.
Modena's Jewish community dates back at least to the 12th century, making it one of the oldest in northern Italy. Under the Este dynasty, the community flourished, with Jewish scholars and financiers playing important roles in the ducal court. In 1638, the Este duke Francesco I established the Ghetto of Modena, a walled quarter in the centre of the city where Jews were required to live. The current monumental synagogue, however, dates from after emancipation: designed by the engineer Ludovico Maglietta and completed in 1873, it stands in the area of the former ghetto and is a beautiful example of 19th-century eclectic synagogue architecture, with an elliptical plan, twelve columns beneath a frescoed cupola, a richly decorated interior, carved wooden furnishings, elaborate textile hangings, and a magnificent bimah (reading platform). The Jewish Museum of Modena, adjacent to the synagogue, holds a significant collection of ritual objects, silverwork, textiles, and documents relating to the history of the Jewish community in Modena and the surrounding Emilian towns, where substantial Jewish communities existed for centuries.
Did you know? The Jewish community of Modena was one of the few in Italy allowed to continue living there almost continuously since the early medieval period, with records of Jewish residents dating back to at least the 12th century.
