About Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The world's oldest active shopping mall (1877), a stunning iron-and-glass cruciform arcade connecting the Duomo to La Scala, lined with historic cafés, luxury boutiques, and magnificent mosaic floors.

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is Milan's architectural crown jewel after the Duomo, a monumental iron-and-glass cruciform arcade completed in 1877, designed by architect Giuseppe Mengoni. At the crossing of the two arms, an octagonal space is covered by a soaring glass dome 47 metres high. The mosaic floors are famous: four circular mosaics represent the cities of Milan, Turin, Florence, and Rome, each with their respective symbols. A Milanese superstition holds that spinning on the heel of the bull's testicles in the Turin mosaic brings good luck, the area is visibly worn. The arcades house Prada, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and other luxury brands alongside historic establishments: the Savini restaurant (1867) and the Camparino bar (1915) where the Campari brand was born. The Galleria connects Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Scala.
