About Sasso Barisano

The upper and more restored cave district of Matera, where the ancient cave houses have been transformed into boutique hotels, cave restaurants, and atmospheric bars, offering the extraordinary experience of sleeping and dining inside 9,000-year-old stone.

The Sasso Barisano is the upper of Matera's two cave districts, running along the northern side of the ravine system toward the modern city centre. While the Sasso Caveoso preserves more of its original character, the Barisano has been more comprehensively restored and repurposed since the UNESCO inscription in 1993. Today the Barisano is the more accessible and visitor-oriented of the two sassi: its cave spaces house boutique hotels, restaurants, wine bars, and cultural venues, making it possible to experience, with all modern comforts, the extraordinary spatial sensation of a dwelling carved from living rock. The evening atmosphere in the Barisano, when the cave-hotel windows glow golden and the lights of the ravine illuminate the ancient stone, is one of the most memorable in southern Italy.

Did you know? Sleeping in a Matera cave hotel means spending the night in a space that, depending on when it was first excavated, may have been inhabited continuously for anywhere from 2,000 to 9,000 years. The temperature inside the cave hotels is naturally stable year-round at approximately 15-18°C, dramatically reducing the energy needed for heating and cooling.
