About Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum
The third pillar of Madrid's Golden Triangle of Art, housing one of the greatest private art collections ever assembled, from medieval European masters to 20th-century American pop art, all in chronological sequence.
The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza is the third member of Madrid's celebrated Golden Triangle of Art, together with the Prado and the Reina Sofía, and houses one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. The collection was built by two generations of the Thyssen-Bornemisza family, German-Hungarian industrialists who assembled works by European masters from the 13th century to the 20th century. The Spanish state purchased the collection from Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza in 1993 for approximately $350 million and installed it in the Palacio de Villahermosa, an elegant 18th-century neoclassical palace on the Paseo del Prado. The collection is arranged chronologically, from medieval masters on the top floor down through Renaissance, Baroque, Dutch Golden Age, Impressionism, Expressionism, and 20th-century American pop art on the ground floor. The collection includes works by Duccio, Jan van Eyck, Dürer, Holbein, Titian, El Greco, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Canaletto, Goya, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Picasso, Dalí, Hopper, Lichtenstein, and hundreds of others. It is one of the greatest encyclopedic art collections in the world.
