About Plaza Mayor
Madrid's magnificent 17th-century arcaded square, once the scene of royal proclamations, Inquisition trials, and bullfights, today a beloved gathering place anchored by the equestrian statue of King Philip III.
The Plaza Mayor is one of the finest Baroque squares in the world, a vast rectangular space of 129 by 94 metres, completely enclosed by uniform five-storey ochre buildings with 237 balconies, 9 entranceways through arched gates, and a continuous colonnade at street level. The square was designed by Juan Gómez de Mora and built between 1617 and 1619 under King Philip III, whose equestrian bronze statue occupies the centre. Originally intended as Madrid's civic and commercial heart, the Plaza Mayor has served across its four-century history as a venue for royal ceremonies, Inquisition autos de fé (public sentencing of heretics), bullfights, public executions, and theatrical performances. The current appearance dates largely from the 1790 reconstruction following a fire. Today it hosts a popular Sunday stamp and coin market, Christmas market in December, and is surrounded by restaurants and cafes.
Did you know? The Plaza Mayor has been destroyed by fire three times, in 1631, 1672, and 1790, and each time rebuilt in almost exactly the same form.
