About Chinchón: Circular Plaza Mayor

A perfectly preserved medieval village 45km southeast of Madrid, famous for its unique circular Plaza Mayor used for bullfights and its local anise liqueur production.

Chinchón is a charming medieval village 45 kilometres southeast of Madrid that offers one of the most evocative day-trip experiences available from the capital. The village is centred on its extraordinary Plaza Mayor, a circular or near-circular arcaded square surrounded by wooden-balconied houses of the 15th and 16th centuries, one of the most unusual and picturesque main squares in all of Spain. Unlike the rectangular Plaza Mayor of Madrid, Chinchón's plaza follows the natural slope of the terrain and developed organically into its characteristic circular shape, with the surrounding gallery houses growing upward into three and sometimes four storeys of wooden balconies overlooking the open space. The plaza traditionally serves as a bullring during the annual summer fiestas, a genuinely traditional corrida in a village setting rather than a purpose-built stadium, and as a stage for theatrical performances throughout the year. Chinchón is also famous for its anise liqueur, Anís de Chinchón, which has been produced here since the 16th century and is a Protected Designation of Origin product. A number of the village's ancient cellars can be visited.

Did you know? The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Chinchón contains an altarpiece painted by Francisco Goya, he painted it for his brother Camilo Goya, who was the chaplain of the parish church.
