About Musée Gallo-Romain
Embedded in the Fourvière hillside, this remarkable museum presents Lyon's Roman past with famous bronze tablets of Emperor Claudius and a stunning Bacchic mosaic.
The Musée Gallo-Romain de Lyon-Fourvière, designed by Bernard Zehrfuss and opened in 1975, is one of the most architecturally ingenious museums in France, a long, spiralling building embedded entirely within the Fourvière hillside, with the Roman theatre visible through its windows. The museum houses the archaeological finds from ancient Lugdunum and covers the period from pre-Roman Gaul through to the late Roman Empire. Its most famous treasures are the two Claudian Tablets, bronze tablets inscribed with a speech delivered by Emperor Claudius (himself born in Lyon) to the Roman Senate in AD 48, in which he argued for giving citizenship rights to Gauls. The tablets are among the most important surviving documents of Roman imperial governance. The museum also contains a spectacular mosaic depicting the Bacchic procession, one of the finest Roman mosaics in France, its figures of satyrs, maenads, and the god Bacchus executed with extraordinary skill and preserved in remarkable condition. The building's spiral descent through the hillside allows visitors to experience both the Roman-era level and the archaeological stratifications of the site.
Did you know? Emperor Claudius was born in Lugdunum (Lyon) in 10 BC, the first Roman emperor born outside Italy, and the bronze tablets in this museum record his speech arguing for Gauls to receive Roman citizenship.
