About Churchill War Rooms
The underground bunker where Winston Churchill directed Britain's war effort during WWII, preserved exactly as it was left in 1945.
Hidden beneath the streets of Westminster, the Churchill War Rooms are the secret underground headquarters from which Winston Churchill and his War Cabinet directed the British war effort during World War II. The complex was operational from 1939 to 1945 and has been preserved almost exactly as it was left when the lights were switched off at the end of the war.
Visitors can walk through the Map Room, where the positions of troops and convoys were tracked around the clock, and see Churchill's private bedroom-office, complete with the desk microphone he used for some of his most famous radio broadcasts.
The Churchill Museum, which forms part of the complex, is the world's most comprehensive museum dedicated to the life of Sir Winston Churchill, covering every aspect of his remarkable 90-year life.
Did you know? When the war ended in 1945, the lights were simply switched off and the door locked, many rooms were found exactly as left when opened to the public in 1984.
