About Abbey Road

The world's most famous zebra crossing, immortalised on the cover of The Beatles' 1969 album "Abbey Road."

Abbey Road in St John's Wood is home to the most famous zebra crossing in the world. On 8 August 1969, photographer Iain Macmillan stood on a stepladder in the middle of the road and took six photographs of John, Paul, George, and Ringo walking across the crossing. One of those shots became the cover of the Beatles' penultimate album, "Abbey Road."

Abbey Road Studios, adjacent to the crossing, is where The Beatles recorded the vast majority of their music. The studios were founded in 1931 and have been used by artists from Edward Elgar to Adele. The studio building's white wall is covered in messages and graffiti from fans worldwide.

The crossing was given Grade II listed status in 2010, protecting it as a site of cultural and historical importance.

Did you know? Photographer Iain Macmillan had just 10 minutes and took only 6 shots, the 5th became one of the most iconic album covers ever.
