About Igreja de Santo António
The most exuberantly gilded interior in Portugal, an 18th-century church declared a National Monument, whose entire interior is covered in carved and gilded baroque woodwork, azulejo tiles, and painted ceiling panels, a masterpiece of Portuguese baroque decoration.
The Igreja de Santo António is one of the most spectacularly decorated churches in Portugal and is considered the finest example of gilded baroque ecclesiastical interior in the country. Built in the early 18th century, the church was almost entirely destroyed in the catastrophic earthquake of 1755, the same earthquake that devastated Lisbon, but was faithfully rebuilt by 1769, fourteen years after the quake, recreating the gilded pre-earthquake interior decorative scheme. The entire interior is sheathed in carved and gilded woodwork (talha dourada), carved relief panels depicting scenes from the life of St Anthony of Padua, gilded columns, arches, and cornices, and a riot of cherubs, angels, and decorative motifs, supplemented by 18th-century blue-and-white azulejo tile panels on the lower walls and a painted ceiling. The church shares an entrance with the Lagos Regional Museum.
Did you know? The Igreja de Santo António was almost completely destroyed in the 1755 earthquake but was faithfully rebuilt by 1769, fourteen years after the quake, recreating the gilded interior so closely that what we see today is considered one of the most authentic surviving examples of early 18th-century Portuguese gilded baroque decoration; the craftsmen who rebuilt it were essentially recreating what had just been lost.
