About Merchant City

Glasgow's historic 18th-century tobacco merchants' quarter, now a vibrant cultural district of cobbled streets, stylish restaurants, art venues, and the beautiful Italian Centre.

Merchant City is the historic core of Glasgow's commercial wealth, a grid of streets to the east of the modern city centre where the tobacco lords of the 18th century built their warehouses, counting houses, and town mansions. Glasgow's extraordinary wealth in the colonial era derived primarily from the triangular trade in tobacco, sugar, and enslaved people, and the merchants who profited most from this trade, Cunninghame, Glassford, Ingram, Buchanan, left their names on the streets of this district. The area declined after American independence severed the tobacco trade, but has been reinvented since the 1980s as one of Glasgow's most fashionable quarters. Highlights include the Italian Centre (a designer shopping courtyard), Hutchesons' Hall (a beautiful 1802 neoclassical building, now a bar and restaurant), the Trades Hall (1794), and a concentration of independent restaurants, bars, and cultural venues including the Citizens Theatre and Trongate 103.

Did you know? At the height of the 18th-century tobacco trade, Glasgow handled over half of all tobacco imported into Britain, more than London, Bristol, and all other ports combined.
