About Place Neuve & Grand Théâtre

Geneva's grandest civic square, dominated by the imposing Grand Théâtre opera house, the Conservatoire de musique, and the statue of General Dufour, the founder of the Swiss Federal Army.

Place Neuve is the most architecturally impressive square in Geneva, occupying the former site of the city's ancient fortification walls and forming a grand semicircle of monumental buildings at the base of the old town hill. The dominant building is the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the city's opera house, opened in 1879, with a neo-baroque façade modelled on the Paris Opéra. Severely damaged by fire in 1951, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1962. The Grand Théâtre presents an ambitious programme of opera, ballet, and dance productions of international calibre, with regular performances by major European opera companies and celebrated conductors and singers. Adjacent to the opera house is the Conservatoire de musique, one of the most important music schools in Switzerland, training many of Europe's leading professional musicians. A large equestrian statue of General Guillaume-Henri Dufour, the distinguished military engineer who created the first modern topographic map of Switzerland and commanded the Federal forces in the brief Swiss civil war of 1847, dominates the centre of the square. The Rath Museum, Switzerland's first public art museum, is also on the square. The square is bordered by the Parc des Bastions on one side and provides a ceremonial gateway to the old town.

Did you know? The Grand Théâtre de Genève was modelled on the Paris Opéra and has been one of the most prestigious opera houses in French-speaking Europe since its opening in 1879.
