About Mont Salève (day trip)

The mountain just over the French border accessible by cable car, offering a panoramic view of Geneva, Mont Blanc, and the entire Lake Geneva basin from 1,100 metres.

Mont Salève, the mountain that forms the dramatic backdrop to Geneva's southern skyline, is technically in France, just a few kilometres beyond the Swiss border, but for Geneva residents it functions as their local mountain in the same way the Uetliberg serves Zurich. Reaching 1,380 metres at its highest point, the Salève is accessible from the Geneva suburb of Veyrier via a cable car that rises from 400 to 1,100 metres in a few minutes, providing one of the most dramatic and sudden changes in perspective available anywhere near a major European city. From the cable car terminus, the view is extraordinary: the entire Geneva basin spreads below you, with the city, its lake, the Jura mountains to the north and west, and on clear days the full panorama of the Alps including Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres the highest peak in the Alps, filling the southern horizon. The plateau of the Salève is popular for walking, cycling, rock climbing (the limestone cliffs of the Salève were among the first venues for modern rock climbing in the late 19th century), and paragliding. The summit area has restaurants and picnic facilities. Geologically, the Salève is an ancient reef formed by coral at the bottom of a prehistoric tropical sea, the fossils visible in the limestone are testimony to the extraordinary geological history of the Alpine region.

Did you know? Mont Salève is in France, not Switzerland, meaning Geneva's "local mountain" is technically a foreign country, just a short cable car ride from the Swiss border.
