About Piazzale Michelangelo

Florence's most famous panoramic viewpoint, created in 1869, with a bronze replica of Michelangelo's David and a breathtaking 180-degree view of the city, the Arno, and the surrounding hills.

Piazzale Michelangelo was created in 1869 by the architect Giuseppe Poggi as part of the grand urban redesign of Florence following Italian unification. Poggi cut a series of broad viale (avenues) into the Oltrarno hillside south of the Arno, connecting the city with the hilltop churches and villas, and placed this large terrace at a natural vantage point with the best possible view of Florence.

A bronze replica of Michelangelo's David stands in the centre, surrounded by bronze casts of the four allegorical figures from the Medici Chapels. The view from the terrace is one of the most iconic in the world: the Arno curving through the city, the Ponte Vecchio and the other bridges, the cluster of towers and domes, Brunelleschi's dome rising above everything, and the hills of Fiesole and Settignano in the distance. The piazzale is always busy, at sunset it becomes a gathering of hundreds of visitors, but even in crowds the view justifies every step of the climb.

Did you know? Piazzale Michelangelo was created in just a few years in the 1860s as part of Florence's transformation into the capital of newly unified Italy, the viale avenues leading up to it were all designed by Giuseppe Poggi.
