About Edinburgh Old Town

A UNESCO World Heritage medieval labyrinth of towering tenements, hidden closes, and centuries of Scottish history stretching from the Castle to Holyrood.

Edinburgh's Old Town is the medieval core of the city and one half of a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1995. Its distinctive character was shaped by centuries of confinement within defensive walls: with nowhere to expand sideways, its inhabitants built upward, creating some of Europe's earliest high-rise tenements, twelve or more storeys tall, and a dense network of narrow closes and wynds running off the Royal Mile spine. This compact medieval city was the crucible of the Scottish Reformation, the Scottish Enlightenment, and some of the most dramatic episodes in Scottish history. Today it remains one of the best-preserved medieval urban landscapes in northern Europe.

Did you know? Medieval Edinburgh's tenements grew up to 15 storeys tall, likely the world's first high-rise apartment buildings, because city walls prevented outward expansion.
