About Calton Hill

A hill in central Edinburgh crowned with monuments, offering one of the finest viewpoints in the city.

Calton Hill is one of Edinburgh's principal hills, rising 103 metres in the centre of the city. It is the site of several iconic monuments including the unfinished National Monument (Edinburgh's answer to the Parthenon), the Nelson Monument commemorating the Battle of Trafalgar, the Dugald Stewart Monument, and the City Observatory. The hilltop provides sweeping views of the Old Town, Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, the Firth of Forth, and the New Town. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Did you know? The National Monument was nicknamed "Edinburgh's Disgrace" because it was never completed, but many now consider it more beautiful in its unfinished state.
