About Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon

One of the three finest art museums in France outside Paris, housed within the ducal palace, its medieval galleries hold the incomparable ducal tombs by Claus Sluter, while the painting collection spans five centuries of European art.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon is considered one of the three or four finest art museums in provincial France, housed within the magnificent Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy. Its collection spans from ancient Egypt through the 20th century, with particular strengths in medieval art (including the ducal tombs and ducal chapel), Flemish and Dutch Old Master paintings (a legacy of the dukes' patronage of Flemish artists), Italian Renaissance works, French 17th-19th century painting and sculpture, and 20th century art. The museum underwent a major renovation and expansion (2003-2019) that significantly improved its presentation and added new gallery spaces, including a spectacular new entrance hall. The crown jewels of the collection are the ducal tombs in the Salle des Gardes: the tombs of Philip the Bold (by Claus Sluter and Claus de Werve, 1404-1411) and John the Fearless and Margaret of Bavaria (by Claus de Werve and Jean de la Huerta, 1443-1470), with their extraordinary alabaster mourner figures. The painting galleries include Flemish works given to the dukes by Jan van Eyck and others, works by Rubens, Rembrandt, Cranach, and important French paintings.

Did you know? The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon is completely free to enter, making one of the finest art museums in France accessible to all. The permanent collection admission has been free since the museum's founding in the 19th century.
