About Musée Archéologique
Housed in the vaulted dormitory of a former Benedictine abbey, this exceptional museum preserves Burgundy's Celtic and Gallo-Roman heritage, including gold votives from the Seine source sanctuary and the extraordinary Bronze Age and Iron Age finds.
The Musée Archéologique de Dijon is housed in the magnificent 11th-century Romanesque dormitory of the former Benedictine abbey of Saint-Bénigne, a long, vaulted stone hall that provides an exceptional setting for its collection of prehistoric, Celtic, Gallo-Roman, and early medieval artefacts. The museum's greatest treasures come from the sanctuary at the source of the Seine (Fontes Sequanae), where a shrine to the Celtic goddess Sequana (who gave her name to the Seine river) attracted pilgrims in the 1st century BC through the 4th century AD. Archaeologists excavating the site in the 1960s found over 200 votive offerings, figures of pilgrims in wood (remarkably preserved), bronze eyes, limbs, and torsos offered by those seeking healing, and a spectacular bronze of the goddess Sequana herself standing in a duck-prowed boat. Other highlights include Bronze Age and Iron Age finds from across Burgundy, Gallo-Roman sculptures and mosaics, and early medieval artefacts.
Did you know? Over 200 wooden votive figures from the Celtic healing sanctuary at the source of the Seine survived in waterlogged peat for 2,000 years, giving us a rare glimpse of what Celtic people looked like, the figures are remarkably naturalistic, some showing specific illnesses.
