About Atomium

Brussels' iconic 102-metre steel structure representing an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times, built for the 1958 World's Fair and now a landmark museum and observation tower.

Rising 102 metres above the Laeken district of northern Brussels, the Atomium is one of Europe's most distinctive structures, nine aluminium-clad spheres, each 18 metres in diameter, arranged in the shape of a body-centred cubic iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Built for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair (Expo 58), it was designed by engineer André Waterkeyn as a symbol of nuclear science's peaceful potential.

After the Expo ended, the Atomium was supposed to be demolished, but Belgians refused to let it go. It became a permanent Brussels icon and was fully restored between 2004 and 2006, with the original aluminium panels replaced by polished stainless steel that shimmers in changing light. Five of the nine spheres are open to the public, connected by escalators inside the tubes. The top sphere houses a restaurant and panoramic viewing platform. The adjacent ADAM Museum celebrates Belgian design heritage.

Did you know? The Atomium was designed to be temporary and demolished after the 1958 World's Fair, Belgians loved it so much that the demolition was cancelled.
