About Saint-Émilion

A UNESCO-listed medieval wine village built into limestone cliffs, famous for its monolithic church, Premier Grand Cru wines, and the Jurade ceremony.

Saint-Émilion is perhaps the most romantic wine village in France, a medieval settlement clinging to limestone cliffs about 40 kilometres east of Bordeaux that has been producing wine since Roman times. The village is named after Émilion, an 8th-century Breton monk who lived as a hermit in a cave beneath the town and became the patron of wine growers. The centrepiece is the extraordinary monolithic church, the Église Monolithe, carved almost entirely from a single limestone cliff between the 9th and 12th centuries, making it the largest monolithic church in Europe. The village's wines, especially its Premiers Grands Crus Classés like Cheval Blanc and Ausone, are among the most sought-after in the world. UNESCO awarded the Saint-Émilion wine landscape World Heritage status in 1999.
