About Cité du Vin

A stunning architectural icon and wine museum opened in 2016, with a swirling golden form evoking wine in a glass and a panoramic wine-tasting belvedere.

The Cité du Vin is one of the most extraordinary museum buildings in France, its undulating golden form rising from the banks of the Garonne like a giant wine whirlpool, an intentional reference to the swirling of wine in a glass. Opened in June 2016 after a decade of planning, the building was designed by the architectural firm XTU and clad in golden glass and aluminium that shimmers differently depending on the light and angle. Inside, 3,000 wine-related objects from 20 wine-producing civilisations invite visitors through an immersive, sensory journey. The highlight for many is the Belvedere on the 8th floor, where entry includes a glass of wine from any of the world's wine regions while panoramic views sweep across Bordeaux's rooftops, the Garonne, and the vineyard landscape beyond.

Did you know? The Cité du Vin's distinctive swirling shape references wine swirling in a glass, it is clad in 7,800 individual glass and aluminium facets that shimmer differently throughout the day.
