About Porticoes of Bologna

UNESCO World Heritage (2021): 38 km of continuous arcaded walkways weaving through Bologna, first built in the 11th century to shelter university students.

The Porticoes of Bologna are the city's most distinctive architectural legacy and one of the longest covered walkway systems in the world. Stretching 38 kilometres through the historic centre and beyond, these arcaded passages were first constructed in the 11th and 12th centuries to provide covered housing extensions for the thousands of students who flooded into the city to attend the world's oldest university. A city ordinance required landlords to build upper floors over the street level, supported by columns or arches, creating these covered walkways at ground level. The system gradually grew until it covered virtually the entire historic centre. The porticoes come in extraordinary variety, from elegant marble columns in the centre to massive brick arches in the suburbs, from Renaissance loggie to Baroque arcades. In 2021, UNESCO inscribed the Porticoes of Bologna on the World Heritage List, recognising their outstanding universal value as a unique urban phenomenon that shaped the social and cultural life of the city for a thousand years.

Did you know? Bologna's 38 km of porticoes were born from a housing shortage: 12th-century landlords were legally required to build arcades to house university students.
