About Certosa di Bologna
A monumental Carthusian monastery turned cemetery, functioning since 1801 as an outdoor gallery of neoclassical sculpture, where Giorgio Morandi and other celebrated Bolognesi are buried.
The Certosa di Bologna is one of the most extraordinary cemeteries in Europe, not merely a place of burial but an open-air museum of funerary art spanning two centuries of Bolognese sculpture. Founded as a Carthusian monastery in 1334, it was converted into a municipal cemetery by Napoleonic decree in 1801. The complex contains remarkable cloisters, porticoes, chapels, and galleries housing thousands of neoclassical, Romantic, and historicist tomb monuments. The quality of the sculpture is extraordinary, many of the finest sculptors of 19th and early 20th century Bologna and Italy produced monuments here. Among those buried at the Certosa are the painter Giorgio Morandi and his three sisters, the great soprano Mirella Freni, and numerous important political and cultural figures from Bologna's history. The monastery church of San Girolamo retains beautiful Renaissance and Baroque decoration. The Certosa is still an active cemetery and a profoundly moving place to visit.
