About Anatomical Theatre

A 17th-century wooden surgical theatre inside the Archiginnasio where Bologna's anatomists performed human dissections before audiences of students and nobles.

The Anatomical Theatre of the Archiginnasio is one of the most beautiful and unusual rooms in Italy. Built in 1637 by Antonio Levanti, it is a compact oval room entirely carved in wood, walls, seats, arched canopy, and decorative figures. Tiered galleries of standing places rise steeply around a central dissection table, designed to allow up to seventy students to watch proceedings simultaneously. Two life-sized wooden statues known as the "Spellati" (skinned men), carved by Ercole Lelli, support the canopy above the professor's throne. The ceiling features a carved sky with astrological symbols, reflecting the Renaissance belief in the connection between the human body and the cosmos. Public dissections were held here in January and February each year, attended by medical students, faculty, nobles, and curious citizens. The theatre was badly damaged by Allied bombing in January 1944 but was meticulously reconstructed using original plans and surviving fragments. It remains one of the finest examples of medical history in Europe.

Did you know? Public dissections here in January were major social events, drawing crowds of nobles and citizens alongside medical students, the 17th century's equivalent of theatre.
