About Gendarmenmarkt

Berlin's most beautiful and harmonious square, framed by the French Cathedral, the German Cathedral, and Schinkel's magnificent Konzerthaus, particularly magical during the winter Christmas market.

The Gendarmenmarkt is widely considered the most beautiful square in Berlin and one of the finest urban spaces in Germany. The square is defined by a perfectly balanced ensemble of three neoclassical buildings: the Deutscher Dom (German Cathedral) to the south, the Französischer Dom (French Cathedral) to the north, each crowned by a grand domed tower, and Schinkel's Konzerthaus (Concert Hall) of 1821 between them. The French Cathedral's name and the square's origins reflect the history of Berlin's Huguenot community: following the Edict of Potsdam in 1685, Friedrich Wilhelm, the Great Elector, invited French Huguenot refugees fleeing religious persecution to settle in Brandenburg-Prussia. By 1700, more than 20% of Berlin's population was of French Huguenot descent. The Konzerthaus is home to the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. The square hosts Berlin's most prestigious Christmas market and summer concerts on its steps.

Did you know? By 1700, over 20% of Berlin's population was of French Huguenot descent, refugees who fled France after 1685 and brought silk weaving, watchmaking, and glassblowing skills with them.
