About Giant's Causeway
Northern Ireland's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, 40,000 interlocking basalt columns formed 60 million years ago, connected in legend to the giant Finn McCool and accessible as a 90-minute day trip from Belfast.
The Giant's Causeway, on the north Antrim coast about 90 minutes from Belfast, is Northern Ireland's only UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most spectacular geological formations anywhere in the world. The Causeway consists of approximately 40,000 interlocking hexagonal basalt columns, most perfectly regular in their six-sided form, created by an ancient volcanic eruption approximately 60 million years ago. As the molten lava cooled rapidly against the sea, it contracted and cracked in a pattern of astonishing geometric regularity, a process that produced the distinctive hexagonal columns that rise from the sea in stepped formations and continue inland in magnificent cliff faces. The columns range in height from a few centimetres to 12 metres, and the tallest section of cliffs reaches 25 metres above sea level. The Causeway is inextricably bound up with the legend of Finn McCool, the giant warrior of Irish mythology who reportedly built the Causeway as a bridge to Scotland to fight the Scottish giant Benandonner. The National Trust manages the site and provides a visitor centre with interactive geological and mythological exhibits. The nearby Bushmills Distillery, the world's oldest licensed whiskey distillery (licensed 1608), is a perfect complement to a Causeway visit.
Did you know? The Giant's Causeway's 40,000 basalt columns were formed when lava cooled and contracted with remarkable geometric regularity about 60 million years ago, the same volcanic event also created Staffa island in Scotland.
