About The Circus

A circular ring of grand Georgian townhouses designed by John Wood the Elder, inspired by the Colosseum in Rome turned inside out.

The Circus is a historic street of large townhouses forming a circle in the city of Bath. Designed by architect John Wood the Elder and built between 1754 and 1768, it consists of three curved segments with 33 houses in total. The design was inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, essentially turning it inside out, with the three tiers of columns (Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian) reflecting classical Roman architectural orders.
