The Sagrada Família is one of the most extraordinary buildings on earth, a construction project begun in 1882 that, on its structural completion in 2026, became the tallest church in the world at 172.5 metres. Designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, who devoted the last 43 years of his life to its construction, the basilica is a unique synthesis of Gothic structure, Art Nouveau ornament, and Gaudí's own profound naturalistic vision. The exterior facades tell the stories of the Nativity, the Passion, and the Glory of Christ in elaborate sculpted detail. The interior is a cathedral of light, a forest of soaring tree-like stone columns supports a canopy of geometric vaults through which hundreds of stained glass windows of extraordinary colour filter light that changes with the hour and season. Gaudí is buried in the crypt. The structure was completed in 2026, on the centenary of Gaudí's death, when the central Tower of Jesus Christ was finished.
