About Palau Güell

Gaudí's first major commission, a lavish urban palace built for industrialist Eusebi Güell in the 1880s, with an extraordinary parabolic entrance, interior of sumptuous materials, and a rooftop of decorated chimneys that prefigured the Sagrada Família.

The Palau Güell was the first great project that established Antoni Gaudí as a major architect, a commission from Eusebi Güell, the Catalan industrialist who would become Gaudí's most important patron and who gave his name to both this building and the Park Güell. Built between 1886 and 1890 on a narrow plot in the Raval district, just off the Ramblas, the palace demonstrates Gaudí's extraordinary ability even at an early stage: the parabolic arches of the entrance, the central dome of parabolic vaulting that rises through all the floors of the house, the extraordinary rooftop of decorated chimneys that directly anticipate the mature Gaudí of the Sagrada Família. The building was Güell's city residence, the hall for concerts, exhibitions, and political meetings at a time when Catalan cultural nationalism was at its height. The interior is built of the most luxurious materials: alabaster, mahogany, iron, marble. The Palau Güell was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Restoration was completed in 2011 and the building is now fully open to visitors, showing Gaudí's work in its most intimate domestic setting.

Did you know? The Palau Güell was the first building in which Gaudí demonstrated the parabolic arch, a structural form he derived from his study of hanging chain models, which he would use throughout his career. The entrance arches are among the earliest examples of this signature Gaudí form.
