About Locorotondo
A hilltop white town overlooking the Valle d'Itria, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, with a perfectly circular medieval street plan and spectacular views over the trulli landscape.
Locorotondo, 'round place', is one of the most perfectly preserved medieval hilltop towns in Puglia and one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The town takes its name from its distinctive circular plan: the medieval town was laid out in a perfect circle on top of a hill, with the streets following the contours of the hill in concentric rings around the central piazza. The buildings are whitewashed in the brilliant white characteristic of the Valle d'Itria towns, creating a visual effect that is particularly striking when seen from the surrounding countryside: a white circle on a green hill, gleaming against the blue sky. The views from the top of Locorotondo are among the best in the region, on a clear day you can see across the entire Valle d'Itria to the sea.
Did you know? Locorotondo's town plan is one of the most perfect examples of circular medieval urban planning in Italy, the name itself means 'round place' in Italian, and the circular layout was not accidental but a deliberate defensive and functional design choice.
